Honoring Nan Thorne Fogel

We at Thorne Nature Experience are taking today to pause with deep gratitude to honor the life of Peggy Nan Thorne Fogel (Nan), who passed away peacefully on November 11, 2025, at the age of 94. From the moment she joined Thorne as our very first board member, treasurer, and secretary, Nan shaped the organization with her sharp organizational skills, steady leadership, and a genuine warmth that made people feel welcome and valued. Raised in the beautiful landscapes of Wyoming and deeply connected to the outdoors from childhood, Nan brought that same spirit of exploration and connection into Thorne.

Nan’s influence extends far beyond titles or years of service. She helped establish a culture rooted in curiosity and joy that still defines our programs today. Her early guidance ensured that Thorne grew with intention, care, and a deep sense of purpose. Even while raising her family, supporting Boulder’s growing conservation movement, hosting community gatherings, and staying actively involved in church and nonprofit life, Nan always made time to champion outdoor education and the power it holds for young people. Her ability to build relationships, bring people together, and make every space feel full of possibility continues to inspire the way we work.

Nan leaves a legacy: a strong, thriving organization and community rooted in the belief that nature is for everyone, and that stewardship, wonder, and fun can go hand in hand. As we continue our work, we carry forward the values that Nan championed and honor her by making every program reflect the care she invested so generously.

Our thoughts are with Nan’s family during this difficult time. Per their wishes, please hug a loved one, sing, or dance in Nan’s honor.
